Historical and archaeological complex "Ancient Turov"

In 2005, a monument "Script" in the Byzantine style was erected at the site of the excavations of the ancient settlement of Turov. This is an archaeological site covered with a glass tent. Here are the remains of an ancient temple, ancient tools and household items. The layout of the Turov was subordinated to the terrain. The city had a very good system of defensive structures, which ensured the safety of its residents.  Detinets occupied the most fortified cape part of the city. A roundabout city was located around it, separated from the detinets by a defensive moat. In addition to defensive ditches, the security of the cities of Ancient Russia was usually provided by defensive earthen ramparts with wooden walls and towers on them, which were erected immediately behind the moat from the inside. Ancient Turov had a relatively small size. His detinets and the roundabout town occupy an area of about 2.5 hectares, of which detinets is about 1 hectare. However, there are two points to consider here. Firstly, the small size of Dedintsy is characteristic of the most ancient cities. It should also be borne in mind that the population of Turov was located not only in Dedinets and in the roundabout city, but also settled in the adjacent territory. In the south-western part of Dedinets there was a defensive tower, now known as the Turov Tower. It was a monument of defensive architecture of the late 13th-19th centuries. It belonged to the type of so-called Volyn towers, which were common in the late 13th-15th centuries on the border of Ukraine (Volyn), Belarus, Poland and adjacent territories. An example of a tower of this type is the famous Belaya Vezha in Kamianets, Brest region, which has survived to this day. Like the Kamenetsky Tower, the Turov Tower had the shape of a circle, was built of bricks bonded with mortar. Inside it was divided into several tiers, but in 1830 the tower was dismantled.
