Turov sarcophagi

During the excavations of the temple, burials in slate sarcophagi were discovered. Slate or "pyrophilite slate" is a beautiful noble dark pink stone that was mined in Ovruch quarries. From slate, ancient craftsmen made various products – millstones, grindstones, sinkers, spinning wheels, body crosses. Slate was used in the construction of temples – the floor was laid. For the Middle Ages, such burials were of status, so representatives of the elite of society were buried. On the territory of Belarus, such burials are known only in Turov. The first three sarcophagi were discovered by M. Karger in 1963. The last two sarcophagi were discovered during the construction of the complex in 2005. The very first slate sarcophagus on the territory of Turov was excavated in 1909 at the cemetery of Boris and Gleb, on the site of an ancient monastery. The fate of this sarcophagus is unknown, only information about its autopsy has been preserved – in addition to the skeleton, the remains of decayed gold threads from the forearms to the knees were found. This sarcophagus was located not far from the Cyril Church, was removed and placed in its narthex. It is currently unknown when and how the church was destroyed, and how the sarcophagus was lost.

There are also 2 brick sarcophagi. They are located on the site of an ancient temple. According to the plan, there should have been 3 of them. The skeleton of a child was found in the sarcophagus under a blue cloth, and the skeleton of a woman aged 24-27 was found under a green one. The skeleton, when discovered, did not lie whole, but scattered. This woman was sick. She had dilated knee joints, enlarged lips and eyes, there was no seam between the cranial plates, she was suffering from anemia, a characteristic disease for residents of that period of this area. It is assumed that she was from a noble family, and in a nearby sarcophagus lies the ashes of her child. Despite the hanging rings on the bust of this woman, when the sarcophagus was discovered, there were no hanging rings next to her skeleton.
